Richard was born in Glendale, California in 1943. He attended UCLA and graduated with a BA in zoology in 1966. During his university years he was a scholarship athlete on the UCLA track and cross country teams. He taught science in the Los Angeles City Schools before moving to Eugene, Oregon, in 1983. He continued to teach chemistry in the Eugene Public Schools and attended the University of Oregon, earning a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Art/Biology) in 1989. Although he had a lifelong interest in drawing and painting, a sabbatical year at the university provided his first formal training in art. Richard retired from teaching in 1999, built a studio in his yard, and now devotes the majority of his spare time to painting.
Richard lives in Eugene with his wife, Susan. His interests include spending time with kids and grandkids, traveling, and running.
